Shila Sawangan Neia Type Interior Design: Bold Contemporary Living

INSADA Integrated Design Team is proud to collaborate once again with Vasanta Group on the interior design of Shila Sawangan – Neia Type, a show unit at Shila Southbank in Sawangan, Depok, West Java, Indonesia. The project explores a contemporary residential aesthetic defined by bold material contrasts, strong architectural lines, and expressive detailing, balanced by comfortable furnishings and inviting spaces that feel unmistakably like home.
With more than 35 years of experience, INSADA Integrated Design Team is an established multidisciplinary architecture and interior design consultancy based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Our portfolio spans single-family residences, multi-family developments, hospitality, healthcare, and commercial projects across Indonesia and internationally. Combining design excellence, technical precision, and an understanding of how people experience spaces, INSADA develops project-specific design solutions that respond to architectural context, target markets, and functional requirements. From concept development to detailed design and construction documentation, our approach integrates design ambition with practical performance, creating distinctive environments that balance visual character, functionality, and everyday comfort.
Located within the Shila Southbank residential development, the Neia Type show unit occupies a 7 × 14-metre plot, equivalent to 98 square metres of land, with approximately 105 square metres of built-up area across two floors. As the smaller unit within the Southbank collection, it presented a distinct design challenge: creating a home with a strong visual identity while maximizing the perception of space and maintaining the comfort expected of contemporary family living.
Rather than relying on a conventional minimalist approach, INSADA developed an interior with greater visual depth and personality. Contrasting finishes, dark timber elements, sculptural furniture, and layered lighting establish a bold contemporary expression, while carefully considered proportions, tactile materials, and a cohesive spatial layout ensure that the home remains welcoming and functional.

Designing a Compact Home with a Strong Identity in Shila Sawangan Neia Type Interior Design
The interior layout of Shila Sawangan – Neia Type is organized around a clear separation between communal and private spaces. The ground floor accommodates an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area, supported by a powder room, storage, and a dedicated laundry room. Upstairs, the private quarters comprise three bedrooms and two bathrooms, including an en-suite bathroom for the master bedroom.
This arrangement maximizes the usability of each floor while maintaining a natural flow between different areas of the home. By consolidating the primary communal functions on the ground floor, the design creates a connected environment for everyday activities, family interaction, and entertaining.
In a compact residence, a bold design expression must be carefully balanced with spatial efficiency. Strong material contrasts and distinctive furniture can easily overwhelm a limited footprint if they are not supported by a coherent planning strategy. INSADA therefore considered sightlines, furniture proportions, storage integration, and material continuity as essential components of the design.
The result is an interior that feels visually distinctive without becoming crowded. Architectural detailing gives each space its own character, while the open layout and considered selection of furnishings preserve a sense of openness throughout the home.

A Contemporary Interior Defined by Contrast and Texture
The design language of Shila Sawangan – Neia Type is built around a contemporary palette that combines crisp neutrals with darker, more expressive elements. Off-white surfaces, soft grey tones, and muted taupes establish a restrained foundation, allowing deep espresso timber joinery, cognac leather accents, and dramatic stone finishes to take a more prominent role.
High-honed marble, dark timber veneers, subtle metallic trims, and tactile upholstery introduce a range of textures that enrich the interior without relying on excessive ornamentation. Clean architectural lines provide structure, while carefully selected furniture and decorative elements introduce contrast and personality.
Lighting plays a central role in bringing these materials together. Concealed LED strips within ceiling coves, wall panels, and open shelving emphasize architectural details and create depth across the interior. Rather than treating lighting as a purely functional requirement, the design uses it to shape the atmosphere, highlighting key surfaces while maintaining comfortable illumination for everyday living.
Custom built-in cabinetry integrates storage into the architecture, helping keep the spaces organized and visually uncluttered. Large glazed openings connect the interior to the adjacent outdoor landscape, allowing natural light to enter and creating a more fluid relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces.
This combination of strong contrasts and carefully controlled detailing gives the residence a confident contemporary identity. The design is bold in its material expression, yet approachable in its overall atmosphere.

A Living Room That Balances Bold Design with Everyday Comfort
The living room illustrates how furniture selection and spatial planning can work together to create a distinctive yet comfortable environment. Given the narrow, linear configuration of the ground-floor layout, INSADA adopted a lighter visual approach to furniture, allowing the surrounding architectural finishes to provide much of the room's character.
The main sofa and accent armchair feature slender, elevated legs that keep the floor visible beneath them. This reduces the visual weight of the furniture and helps the room feel more spacious, particularly when viewed from the dining area.
The sofa's light oat-coloured textured fabric introduces a softer counterpoint to the darker timber and stronger material contrasts elsewhere in the interior. Rather than competing with the architectural finishes, the upholstery provides a neutral, comfortable focal point that helps the room feel relaxed and inviting.
A low-profile, backless ottoman provides flexible seating without obstructing views toward the dining area or outdoor landscape. Meanwhile, a round marble coffee table introduces a sculptural element that contrasts with the room's predominantly linear architecture. Its slim black frame provides definition while maintaining visual transparency.
The resulting living room balances two objectives: establishing a strong contemporary design statement and creating a space that feels natural to inhabit. It is visually composed enough for a show unit, yet its furniture arrangement and comfortable materials remain suited to everyday family life.

A Master Suite with Dramatic Material Expression
The master bedroom extends the home's contemporary aesthetic into a more intimate setting. Here, deeper colours, rich textures, and more dramatic material combinations create a sense of character while maintaining the comfort expected of a private retreat.
A plush upholstered platform bed anchors the room, complemented by a leather headboard and dark timber flooring. Marble and stone wall panels featuring terracotta undertones introduce movement and contrast around the bed and television area, creating a distinctive focal point without relying on elaborate decorative elements.
Smoked-glass wardrobes with integrated strip lighting combine practical storage with a lighter visual presence. Their reflective surfaces add depth, while glass pendant lights and concealed ceiling-cove lighting create layers of illumination that enhance the materials and soften the overall atmosphere.
The adjoining en-suite bathroom continues the design language through large-format charcoal slate tiles and timber wall accents. A floating vanity, backlit LED mirror, and frameless glass shower enclosure maintain clean lines and a streamlined appearance.
The contrast between dark stone, timber, and indirect lighting gives the bathroom a more dramatic character, while the carefully considered illumination keeps the space inviting. Together, the bedroom and bathroom demonstrate how bold material choices can create a memorable interior without compromising the sense of comfort and retreat.
Personalized Spaces for Creativity and Family Living
Beyond the principal living areas, Shila Sawangan – Neia Type demonstrates how a consistent contemporary design language can accommodate different activities and individual personalities. Each bedroom and supporting space has its own identity while remaining connected to the home's broader architectural expression.

A Creative Studio Designed for Productivity
The fashion designer's creative studio takes a more tailored and functional approach. Custom millwork incorporates open display shelving with integrated LED task lighting, allowing selected objects and materials to be displayed while keeping the workspace organized.
A generous L-shaped desk provides a practical working surface, complemented by a mirrored splash panel and an ergonomic leather swivel chair. Warm timber finishes, brass desktop accents, and a richly coloured abstract area rug introduce texture and personality, balancing the technical requirements of a working studio with the sophistication of the surrounding residence.
The space demonstrates how a dedicated work area can be integrated into a contemporary home without feeling like a separate commercial environment. Its design supports productivity while retaining a cohesive residential character.

A Children's Bedroom with a Playful Identity
The children's bedroom offers a more playful interpretation of the home's design language. Light natural oak cabinetry creates a bright foundation, while a curved, semi-circular upholstered headboard introduces softer forms into the interior. An illustrated safari-themed wall mural adds colour and imagination, giving the room a distinct identity suited to younger occupants.
Custom wooden pegboards, a streamlined study nook, and distinctive giraffe-head wardrobe handles combine functional detailing with playful elements. Soft amber lighting complements the natural wood finishes and creates a comfortable atmosphere for rest, play, and study.
Rather than applying the same aesthetic uniformly across every room, INSADA allows each space to respond to its intended user. This approach gives the home greater personality while maintaining continuity through material quality, integrated detailing, and thoughtful planning.

Contemporary Design That Still Feels Like Home
Shila Sawangan – Neia Type reflects INSADA Integrated Design Team's approach to residential interior design: creating spaces with a clear design identity while ensuring that aesthetics remain closely connected to everyday living.
The project moves beyond a conventional neutral interior through the use of contrasting materials, dark timber elements, expressive stone surfaces, and distinctive furniture. Yet these stronger design decisions are balanced by an open-plan layout, comfortable upholstery, integrated storage, natural light, and personalized spaces that support the routines of family life.
For compact residential interiors, achieving this balance requires more than selecting attractive finishes. It involves coordinating spatial planning, circulation, furniture proportions, lighting, and material relationships to ensure that the design feels cohesive rather than overwhelming.
Through its collaboration with Vasanta Group, INSADA brings this approach to Shila Sawangan – Neia Type at Shila Southbank, Sawangan, Depok. The result is a contemporary home with a confident visual expression, thoughtfully detailed interiors, and an inviting atmosphere that balances bold design with the comforts of home.
