Advantages and Challenges of Precast Concrete

In 2018, we were developing an architecture and interior design of Panahome, a compact single-family residential housing complex located in Cikarang. A feature that the owner has requested in this project is a pour on-site precast construction system. This precast system is a construction methodology the clients have invested in. On-site precast construction technology used in Panahome involves the manufacture of building components on the construction site itself, rather than offsite in a factory.

This method has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, which are outlined below:


1. Speed: Precast construction technology can significantly reduce the time taken to complete a construction project. This can lead to faster completion times and quicker occupancy of the building.

2. Quality: Precast components methodology leads to more controlled, high-quality components. Ensuring consistent quality reduces the likelihood of errors or defects, which leads to greater structural integrity and durability of the building.

3. Increased project control: By manufacturing components on-site, builders can closely monitor the construction process, ensuring that the components meet quality standards and are integrated effectively into the project.


1. Limited scale: On-site precast construction panel sizes are limited to the weight capacity of the crane used.

2. Weather-related delays: On-site precast construction is more vulnerable to weather-related delays than offsite manufacturing, as weather conditions may impact the ability to manufacture components on-site.
